It is no coincidence that Lisa Stamm’s gardens reflect the froth of seawaves translated into swaying and swelling grasses and perennials— she takes her cue from the ocean. She rides the ferry to work every day. During the growing season, she boards a boat shortly after dawn to take her off Shelter Island and onto Long Island’s mainland, where her clients’ gardens await. For Lisa, the time spent floating across the water is a critical interlude in her workday, not only for the lulling pause it provides from the day’s pace, but because that is when she fishes for inspiration.
